OCULAR ROSACEA

What causes rosacea?

Scientists do not know what causes rosacea, but some think that genetics and environment may play a role in its development.

Some researchers believe that rosacea is a disorder that involves swelling of the blood vessels, resulting in flushing and redness. Other scientists think that a microscopic organism or mite in tine facial hair follicles may clog the skin’s oil gland openings, causing swelling and redness. Some research has also shown a possible link between rosacea and the bacteria called Helicobacter pylori – the same bacteria that cause gastrointestinal infections.

Several factors are known to aggravate (but not cause) rosacea, including:

  • exposure to heat, sunlight, wind and cold;
  • strenuous physical activity;
  • drinking alcohol;
  • consuming hot drinks or spicy foods;
  • experiencing emotional stress;
  • coughing for long periods.
